Word of mouth is still the backbone of the trades. A good plumber, electrician, or contractor gets most of their work from referrals, repeat customers, and a truck that shows up on time. None of that is going away, and a website will not replace it.
But here is what actually happens today, before word of mouth even gets a chance to work.
Someone hears your name, then they check
A neighbour mentions you. A friend gives them your number. Before they call, most people do one more thing first: they search your business name on their phone, just to see who they are dealing with.
If nothing comes up, or what comes up is a bare Facebook page from three years ago, that small gap of doubt is enough for some people to keep looking. Not because you are not good at what you do. Because they have no way to confirm it in the ten seconds they are willing to spend.
What a website actually needs to do for a trades business
It does not need to be fancy. It needs to answer three questions fast, ideally from a phone screen while someone is standing in their driveway looking at a leaky pipe:
- What do you do. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, renovation. Said plainly, above the fold.
- Where do you work. London and area means something specific. Say it.
- How do they reach you right now. A phone number they can tap, not a contact form they have to fill out and wait on.
The businesses that skip this pay for it quietly
Nobody loses a job in an obvious way because of a missing website. It is quieter than that. A homeowner compares three names, two have something to look at and one does not, and the one that does not simply gets called last, or not at all. You never hear about it. You just get one fewer call than you could have.
You do not need to be a tech person for this
This is the part most tradespeople get wrong before they look into it. You are not expected to build this yourself, manage a dashboard, or learn anything new. A local host builds it, keeps it running, and you go back to your actual job. The whole point is that it takes zero ongoing effort from you once it is live.
